East Essex Food and Farming Group
Schools Day 17 May 2011
Over 250
primary-school Year 3 children were treated to a day on the
farm by Essex Food and Farming Group.
The children, from eight local
schools visited a farm in the Dengie Hundred to watch
sheep-shearing and wool spinning, learn about vegetable and
cereal growing, make bread, and go on a nature trail
tracking birds and wildlife. “This is our third
year running the day out, and the trip is free for the kids
as we raise the funds through sponsorship,” said Mary Hull,
chairman of the Essex Food and Farming Group.
“Our aim is to show
as many aspects of farming and food production as we can, in
a friendly, easy to learn environment.
We made chips from potatoes,
showed the children how the machinery works and looked at
bees in a hive.” Each child left with a ‘goody-bag’ with
worksheets, pen, writing pads, milk-shake, cheese, stickers
and leaflet.
2011 HGCA FarmHouse Breakfast Week 23-29 January 2011
East Essex Food & Farming Group visited St. Cedd’s Primary School, Bradwell-on-Sea during Farmhouse Breakfast Week to talk to the children about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast each day.
The 290 children were interested to hear
and discuss the story of cereals from field to plate, after
which sausages from Southminster Butchers were served in
bread rolls from Golden Platter together with home made milk
shakes.
