FeRN Schools Olympic 2012 Project

FeRN's Schools Olympics 2012 Project 'Eat to go faster, higher, further' is an initiative aimed at children and young people:

  • to promote health and nutrition

  • to learn about food from across the world

  • to encourage connection with visitors and competitors to Olympics 2012

 

The 2012 Olympics provides a unique opportunity to promote healthy eating and the need for exercise, particularly amongst younger people.  The Olympic Committee highlighted ‘sustainability’ –‘One Planet 2012’- as an important feature of the Olympic bid; this must include food supply and production.

 

With visitors from around the world representing different cultures and different diets - the opportunity for learning is immense. The athletes will an important focus for children and young adults to learn the health and nutrition requirements for fitness and competition.

With these factors in mind FeRN is promoting a new, exciting school project, initially targeting Key Stage 2 with opportunities for adaptation to KS1 and KS3 called 'Eat to go faster, higher, further'.

The project aims to help children to:

  • understand what is meant by a 'balanced diet

  • research and plan a balanced meal

  • understand that the body needs food for energy, health and growth

  • select appropriate food types to fulfil a balanced diet.

FeRN's regional and local organisations and affiliated groups are promoting the project in their areas, including taking it into schools.  Adapt the project for your own needs and local area, depending on the Olympics 2012 sport that means the most to you
